While in Atlanta, Eric and I made it to one of the few movie theaters that are playing this ‘rockumentary’ right now.  It was made to raise awareness for the 27 million modern day slaves.  Labor slaves.  Sex slaves.  You name it.  Human trafficking.  We saw Call and Response with about a dozen others in the theater, and the movie has had a lasting impact.  It’s hard to talk about it too, like “ooh, it’s so good, you have to see it.”  It was actually disgusting.  The movie is PG-13, so they obviously did a good job of not going over the line graphically.  The reality of human brokenness meeting American indifference was bitter.  The songs that were written/performed for this film were poignant to say the least.  My new favorite line is from a Switchfoot song that I had heard many times before, Awakening:

I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to know that my heart’s still beating,
It’s beating, I’m bleeding.

The film is definitely a wake up call.  I haven’t processed it all yet, but I am beginning to.  If you live near one of the theaters, you should check it out.  You can listen to the soundtrack on their player, and if you see the movie, it reinvents these songs.

  1. Kurt,
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to see this but have heard great things. Our group of friends here (kinda consider each other our church) have been talking and brainstorming about ways to raise the average American’s awareness on these issues. There are some incredibly brilliant, creative guys that are in the works of creating a few projects that quite literally could change the world, and they have the connections and ability to do so. I will keep you informed as their ideas come to fruition, but it would be so cool to get the Oroville youth involved in whats about to happen. I’d love to dialogue over email or something about your thoughts on this movie though.

I love reading your blog, can’t wait to see you, Rhonda and Baby Lib once I’m back!
